A lot has happened lately, and many things are coming to fruition in my life that I am so happy about. Change can be difficult for me, but this change is exciting and will give me a different perspective on life because my life is becoming more adult!
Looking for a job can be difficult for anyone, but it is a completely different kind of difficult when someone has a disability like me. Disabilities can make many things a whole lot harder because many able-bodied people don’t realize what people with disabilities can do. They also really don’t want to give people with disabilities a chance to prove them wrong, and it’s very upsetting that this is the case. Disabled people can do a lot of positive things in this world, and they can make a difference in whatever they do!
The Department of Rehabilitation supports people with disabilities to search for and find jobs, and that is where I started getting help from in September 2023. Finding a job has been really difficult not only because I have a physical disability, but also because I have never worked. I am very grateful for the Department of Rehabilitation because they have many ways that they can help someone like me.
Since the beginning of this year, I have been in a program called Adult Work Experience (AWE). This program has given me so much motivation to start working, and it will help me find a perfect job that is suitable for my life right now. AWE provides me with the chance to work at one location for 100 hours and get paid for what I do there. It will be considered as an internship through the program. I can be an intern at up to three different locations. After my internship is over at a specific location, the director there will have the choice to hire me on as an employee.
Last month, I received really exciting news that I would be getting my very first internship as an employee of AWE. My internship is at an addiction treatment center in my hometown. I started my internship on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. I am so excited for this experience that I have been given, and I am so grateful that my first internship is where it is!
I have personal experience with addiction. I think this internship will encourage me to find out what I really want to do with my life! This opportunity will help me be a better version of myself, and it will be such a worthwhile experience! I hope this internship works out in my favor because it is at a place that hits close to home with me, and I already know that it will change my life forever!
Having this internship as my first ever job is really special because it gives me a feeling of hope and gratitude that I have never had before. This opportunity has already given me a chance to get back into my faith, and I am so grateful for that! I do not know where this internship will take me, but I know that God has given me a path to follow in His steps and to change my life forever!
