Many wheelchair users, like myself, understand that there is a stigma that able-bodied people have about them. The stigma is that we are not able to do normal things because we are not like able-bodied people. It is a shame that we have a stigma around us because it is just not true.
We can do normal things, even though how we do them may be different. There are many ways that people do things, and wheelchair users want others to see that our way of doing things is just as efficient, even though it may take a little longer.
I want to change the stigma around wheelchair users because it feels like a burden on each and every one of us. Being in a wheelchair should not have a stigma. It changes the dynamic of who we are as people, and it’s not fair at all.
We, as wheelchair users, are strong and resilient. Personally, I want to be strong and show people that wheelchair users can do many things because wheelchair users are people too, and that means we should be treated just like everyone else is treated. I am glad that I am a wheelchair user because I have always been excited to show people things that they do not always see. It makes me proud that I am the person that is showing them. I want to be a role model for wheelchair users because they shouldn’t be afraid of what people say about them.
My purpose of making this blog and sharing my story is to give others courage and motivation to change the stigma around wheelchair users!
